99.8% of Eritreans voted to become independent (1993)

Eritrea red line

ERITREAN DEMOCRATIC HOMELAND PARTY

 99.8%

Every year on the 24th of May, Eritreans mark a memorable day – the National Independence Day. It came neither as a donation nor as a gift but was rather earned under a barrage of bullets and cannons, and on the skulls of men and women – a war that lasted three decades. The Eritrean people, with all the social makeup they represent, had sacrificed everything precious to concretise a day like this. They did such sacrifice because it is well worth it. They never exhausted their patience and interest in embarking on such a long journey. They rather grew confident knowing that their demands were well deserved and justified. These well-merited demands were corroborated by a referendum showing that 99.8% of Eritrean people believe their demands were fair and warranted.

The official spokesman for the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, Dina Mufti, stated on March 30, 2021: if the Eritrean people were asked, they would not want to celebrate the Separation Day simply because they do not like it. However, he later apologised for his statement saying it was understood out of context. Hence, could it be that he failed to use the right expression and so did not by any way mean what is understood from his statement? Did he mean to test the Eritrean people’s love for their country after he saw an overwhelmingly majority-led opposition againstAfwerki’s regime? Was it an internal message to satisfy those greedy Ethiopian fanatics?Or was it a message to outsiders – international parties.

Irrespective of what is meant by this message, it has shown that the autonomy and sovereignty of Eritrea constitutes a red line, and that the Eritrean people are fully aware that there is a difference between the sovereignty of their homeland and that of Afwerki’s regime. Likewise, it has shown that the perception of the people about their principles is crystal clear, that they may have different political views and affiliations but will never differ on the sovereignty of their homeland. Hence, their attack against the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry spokesman has been overwhelmingly and understandably unanimous.

The statement has proven that Eritrean people are exceptionally vigilant and politically conscious, which makes them difficult to conspire against.

In fact, this statement reveals ill-intentions and ambitions of the Ethiopian politicians. Many similar statements were previously released by some Ethiopian political leaders. Despite our rejection of such statements, we did not deliberate on them since they had not been released by any official authority. Hence, we proclaim that the apology expressed by Dina Mufti all alone is not enough, and that the Ethiopian government must also apologise at the highest level.

This statement is so self-evident that it does not require any further explanation. Because it was released by the official authority, the Americans understood the ramification of such a statement. Thus, the American Embassy in Eritrea did so well in respondingagainst it. This popular uprise was an indication for all Ethiopians and every ill-intended person to understand that Eritrea is not for sale, and that its independence and sovereignty are not subject to compromise.

The Eritrean people welcome good neighbourliness and hold common aspirations and mutual respect for the two countries.
